What do
healthy gums and periodontal tissues look like?
Healthy
gums have a pinkish matte color. The gum line should end clearly where it
merges with the tooth, and when dry, it should look like orange peel when
viewed with the naked eye.
What
are the symptoms of gum disease?
A
deposit called “microbial bacterial plaque” that covers the teeth inflames
periodontal tissue. This bacterial plaque is a transparent layer that sticks to
the tooth and is the main cause of gum diseases. It is harmless for the first
few hours but as the plaque reaches a certain thickness, the bacteria in it
begins to synthesize toxic substances that cause inflammation in gums and tooth
decay.
What is
tartar and how do you prevent it?
Effective
brushing, flossing, regular dental check-ups every 6 months and tooth cleaning
are recommended to prevent and remove tartar if necessary.
What
does gum bleeding indicate?
Bleeding
increases with the severity of gingivitis and is the most important symptom
seen at each stage of gum disease. Loss of teeth and bone can occur if not
treated.
Can gum
disease be prevented and controlled?
Good
oral hygiene, correct and early diagnosis and proper treatment will help
prevent gum disease.
